Ken Bates is a former owner of Chelsea Football Club, a professional football club based in London, England. He purchased the club in 1982 and was chairman until 2003. During his tenure, he oversaw significant changes to the club's infrastructure, including the construction of the East Stand at Stamford Bridge stadium and the formation of Chelsea Village, a commercial and residential development next to the stadium. He also appointed successful managers, including Gianluca Vialli and Jose Mourinho, who led the club to numerous domestic and European titles. Despite his successes, Bates was known for his controversial statements and confrontational management style, which often put him at odds with fans and journalists. He sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2003.
